’Good morning, Commander. You have - Error: Inbox full -. new messages available for viewing. All of them are flagged as priority.’
’Brilliant. So much for simplified communication….’
’Additionally, the Council has requested your presence for an emergency meeting scheduled to start in two hours.’
’Of course they fucking have. Bring it up on screen two when they start.’
’Command acknowledged. Meeting to be displayed on screen two.’
’Contact engineering and the psionics research division heads as well. Tell them to get their asses in my office immediately.’
’Command acknowledged. Message, ’To get their asses in my office immediately.’ Sent.’
...
’Good enough. Voice recognition off.’
’Command acknowledged. Powering down main processors.’
Three days, seven hours, and roughly thirty two minutes. That was the exact amount of time that it had taken for shit to hit the proverbial fan.
In a way he should have probably been relieved that it even took that long to happen, but then, with the body count currently sitting where it was, there wasn’t any real happiness that could be found from such a shallow victories. No. Only real victories could be celebrated now.
Victories like Lockdown’s spectacular performance on their last mission.
The successfully recovery of the device that was emitting ADVENT’s strange signal, and the subsequent destruction of the entire ADVENT base was by no means a small feat for them in the first place. Add in the propaganda material they had also found, on top of being the first unit to survive an encounter with the ADVENT leadership, and their work could only be hailed as a stunning success.
But all that success came at a very heavy price.
That price being another city.
Specifically, New York.
The city once hailed as the business capital of the world. Obliterated in a matter of minutes, by the very same psionic storms that he had personally claimed XCOM would be able to suppress or prevent.
As of that moment, a total of eight million people had been confirmed dead; the US council member stationed there was trapped in a bunker under millions of tons of rubble; and the Wall Street records were confirmed to have been nuked, and thus throwing the world’s economic state into absolute chaos.
While it was true he had taken a calculated risk in attacking the ADVENT base directly, he honestly had not expect this kind of targeted response. Clearly the enemy had more intel than he gave them credit for. That or they just got lucky with their target selection. Something that while unlikely, he could not rule out entirely.
tap-tap-tap
The series of sharp knocks on the door quickly snapping him free from the current line of thoughts, and back to the present.
’Enter.’ He stated. Reshuffling a few sheets of paper on his desk, into a slightly neater stack as the head of XCOM’s research division entered into his domain.
If someone had told him a few years back, that the German, slip of a woman know as Dr. Vahlen would single handedly change the world of scientific development as they knew it, he probably would have laughed at the idea.
Of course that was before she discovered the true potential of MELD, pioneered the field of human genetic modifications, and unlocked the secret to creating human psionics…
Just one of those discoveries would have normally lead to her name being plastered into the history books right there alongside Einstein, let alone the countless minor miracles she seemed to perform almost every week.
By this point her ability to flawlessly integrate/harness alien tech, strictly to further her own scientific pursuits, had made her not only an integral, but arguably, irreplaceable member of XCOMs research division. Even if she wouldn’t stop yelling at him for the soldiers’ rather liberal use of explosives in the field.
’Commander.’ She nodded, walking smoothly up to his desk. ’What did you call me here for?’
Never one to waste time, and always straight to the point. Yet another one of the great many things the Commander had come to respect about her, and her homeland over the years.
’I have a few questions for you,’ he replied evenly, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. ’Namly about the genetic modifications that you did to Private Drew Crawford.’
’And I have a data pad.’ she stated coldly, taking up the offered seat, and smoothing out the crinkles in her pristine lab jacket. ’Why did we need to talk face to face?’
A deep sigh emanated from the Commander as he mentally prepared himself for the lecture he was no doubt about to receive and handed her a file with Lockdown’s combat report from last mission so she could follow along with his explanation.
’During our latest mission, squad Lockdown encountered one of ADVENT’s leaders. An immensely powerful psionic creature, calling itself an Ethereal.’
Vahlen’s eyes meticulously scanning each page of the report as he recounted the events that had transpired. Something which may have irked him normally, but given who he was talking to, he could hardly question her ability to multitask.
’Finally, we also suspect that they are the ones responsible for the psionic storms that leveled two cities.’
’If there is more than one, that is quite possible,’ she agreed with a stiff nod. ’I did explain to you about the long term potential for psionics, did I not? But no no. The work on the Mechs and genetic modifications was always the higher priority project.’
’At the time they were,’ he scoffed. Amused she had not let that particular argument go. ’Still are. Because for all of the Ethereal’s power, Drew was able to resist one of them rather easily. You and Doctor McGonaghue handled his genetic modifications, and he tells me they were the key player in the squad’s survival.’
She nodded a few times, before placing the file back on his desk, and pulling out her own data tablet. ’When you sent me the request to prepare a second batch of modifications for a, ’backup Lockdown’, you told me you wanted them to be more resistant to mental manipulation. Which is exactly what neural surge made him.’
’Neural Surge is only half of the equation,’ he snapped back. ’I’m talking about the voice he keeps referencing. The one that seems to be able to dampen the effects, and continue functioning despite him being completely mind controlled. Without that, neural surge is potentially useless! Your most recent report however indicated you had figured out it’s source, which means we can replicate it right?’
Turning the tablet around for the Commander to see, she pointed to a small bump on the side of a rather obvious brain scan.
’Yes, I did. And if you had done more than skim the contents of said reports, then you would know we can’t. Not unless you wish to put a growth in the head of every single soldier.’
’You know full well I read the fucking report,’ an uncharaistic snarl emerged from the Commander as he spoke. ’But when faced with extermination Doctor, every alternative is preferable. Longer term ramifications be damned. Now, answer my question. Can. It. Be. Replicated?’
A small grimace also appeared on the Doctors face as she quickly went back to work on the tablet.
’In theory, yes’ she nodded. A cold glare accompanying her every word. ’But we will need a few days to test our current working theory and know for sure.’
’You have three days then. After that you had better either begin production, or bring me an alternative solution.’ The Commander ground out; his hand gesturing for her to leave. ’Three days. Make sure they count. Dismissed.’
A sharp nod was all the reply he got as she immediately got up left. The harsh knocking of her footsteps marking her mood as one best left undisturbed.
It was quite often that his and Dr. Vahlen’s conversations ended in one of them pissed off. None of that mattered right now though. All that mattered was the mission.
They would have plenty of time to work things out when the planet was not in jeopardy.
Tap-tap-tap
A second round of knocks emanated from the door, ushering in his second meeting.
’Ah Doctor Shen.’ The Commander greeted. ’Take a seat…’

The final keystroke of the last document for the day sounded like heavenly music to his ears.
Crack-crack-pop
The series of distinctive pops and cracks that emanated from his back as he stood up however, much less so.
Lord knew his doctor probably would have made comments about spending to many hours in front of the computer, and not enough time outside his office. Not that they were alive anymore to complain mind you, but still, it was the thought that counted.
Of course it wasn’t like he had much of a choice in what he did these days. Someone needed to do the work, and he was the only one fit to do it. The only one truly committed to saving this god forsaken planet. Personal sacrifices be damned.
’Fucking traitors,’ he muttered to no one and walking over to pour himself a much needed drink. ’Cowards. The lot of them.’
It had been somewhat expected, but all the same. To lose support from all but Russia and China in one fell swoop. It hurt not only his pocket book, but his heart as well. His chances of success dwindling rapidly even as he stood there.
No amount of information, tech or propaganda could sway their decisions either. No matter how horrifying the experimentation they had uncovered was, nothing could seem to tear them off the loss of New York.Ethereal Enigma Mina Route
It was very clear to him and everyone else, they had all walked into that meeting with the decision already made. Alternative answers be damned.
’Fuck,’ he muttered again, taking a long slip from his glass. ’Fuck fuck fuck fuck…’
Oh sure, they had other reasons for leaving besides the attack. The dog shit economy New York’s collapse had created. Riots and destabilization of entire swaths of their counties. Fear of an attack occurring on one of their own cities. Pressure from their governments to get results. Ect ect ect. The list never ended.
Truth be told, he had enough resources banked to keep XCOM going for a little while to. Maybe a month or two, but after that… Well he didn’t really want to think about that right now.
No. Right now, he needed to come up with an answer.
A way to pull support back to him, and XCOM.
A big, all capped, fuck you, air mailed directly to ADVENT. Something so brazen and impactful, the world would have no choice but to acknowledge he could win them their planet back.
Propaganda helped, but they needed to capitalize on the raw wounds, seeing the flayed and mutilated corpses of ADVENTS testing site, would make. Strike hard and fast. Preferably while the iron was still cherry red.
The only question was what was big enough to entice the reaction he wanted?
A bombing?
No. They had just finished blowing up an entire enemy base, and it had barely made a peep on the local news. Granted with the war starting as it had, it really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that explosions did not have the shock factor they use to. Nukes were the final word when it came to blowing shit up after all.
That, and explosions were also always signed to whomever it concerned. A big boom might be too impersonal to make any real connection with the civilian population.
No, this task required something on the opposite end of the spectrum. Something a lot more personal. A hand delivered letter so to speak.
An assassination.
Not just any old killing though. A high profile assassination of an ADVENT Ethereal.
The gears in his mind slowly grinding to a halt as the idea started to take form. A sick smile emerging from behind the grim scowl that had adorned his face for lord knows how long today.
It was time ADVENT learned that a cornered predator was far more dangerous than a free one.
Good evening ladies and gents. Did you miss me?
First and foremost, I do apologize for the delay on this chapter. Things got a little crazy down here, and well a 3.8 GPA doesn’t just magically appear on your front door step.
Secondly, I know this was not the longest chapter ever, and probably does not make the wait feel justified, but it was honestly the only way to get it done. And for that I am again, very sorry.
This chapter was always going to be a little short, but I also didn’t want to unnecessarily pad it out with boring dialog or randomly switch perspectives. I have tried that before and it just didn’t work the way I had hoped.
Finally, let’s all make sure to give a BIG shout out to Xabiar for their help on this. Their work as a beta reader has been probably the biggest influence on the quality of this story, so any support you show them would be a great way of saying thank you for helping me.
As always please don’t forget to review on the way out. Reviews help immensely when trying to motivate myself to finish chapters tough chapters like this one. Good, bad, it don’t matter. Review review review.
Hope your all doing well, and See you next time
